It was late afternoon by the time we finally left the bed. She’d gathered her belongings, and as she slid on her dress, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was making a mistake letting her leave. Nevertheless, we kept moving. I opened the door to the Aston and she got in, her thank you soft and sad.

Fuck. I got in on the other side, and we were silent as we neared her hotel. I parked us at the curb and reached down and took her hands.

“When does your plane leave?”

“At five-thirty,” she answered, her hands tightening in mine.

“I’ll be there to see you off. It’s O’Hare, right? Which terminal?”

As she answered, I stroked my favorite spot on her neck, and she leaned into me.

“I’m sure your best friend is here already.”

There was a jingle, and a call came through. As Mandy flashed across the screen, she only had eyes for me. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make my chest feel bigger.

Elise’s eyes were drowning in conflict as she wrapped her arms around my neck. “Okay.”

I embraced her in return with one arm and kissed her neck again.

She looked at me, taking her teeth between her lip. Elise opened her door and grabbed her duffle bag. With a careful look, she got out and closed the door behind her. As she disappeared into the building, I sat there for a few minutes feeling like shit. This weekend was supposed to be her becoming addicted, not me.
